Bro. Lionel was initiated into the John Walker Lodge, No. 8967, Reading & District Province on 9th November 1967.
He later moved to Lord Balcarres Lodge, No. 365 in Chorley Province who raised him to Certified Primo on 27th October 1977, to Knight of the Order of Merit on 5th March 1981 and to Roll of Honour Member on 19th June 1986.
He is a founder member of the Juniper Lodge 10528 which opened in June 1992. He served there as Treasurer from 1992 to 1996 and was elected to Trustee in 1998, an office he held until its closure in 2007.
He served as Lord Balcarres Lodge delegate to Chorley PGL in 1978 and was elected to his first PGL office as PG Waiter in 1979. He served in several offices of PGL until he was elected to be Provincial Grand Primo of Chorley for 1985. As Immediate Past Provincial Grand Primo he took over the office of PGP again in August 1986 when the serving PGP retired due to ill health. He was again elected to serve as PGP of the Chorley & Blackburn province for 2005. He served as Provincial Grand Lodge Trustee and Delegate to GL from 1989 to 2007. He took up the office of Grand Lodge Delegate again in 2010.
He served as Knight President in 1984 and was a founder member of of the Chorley Roll of Honour Assembly where he has served as Secretary since 1995. He served as President of the Assembly in 2001, the true Millenium year.
